Blue Grosbeak Bird Feeder Picture
A large, vibrantly blue bunting with an enormous silver bill and chestnut wingbars. The male Blue Grosbeak sings a rich, warbling song from trees and roadside wires. He and his cinnamon-colored mate often raise two broods of nestlings in a single breeding season. They are widespread but not abundant across the southern U.S., and are expanding their range. Blue Grosbeaks are heavily parasitized by cowbirds, which lay their own eggs in the grosbeak’s nests.
Saturday, 8:01 AM – A gray, but brightening sky. A layer of lowering fog has filtered the sunrise. It’s a little damp, but 66°. Having a pre-run cup of coffee on my back patio. An Eastern Phoebe takes a bath in the dew-laden grass. Some of the usual birds are at the feeders: chickadees, cardinals, titmice… but a few unusual visitors have passed through this morning as well.

First, a pale gray Opossum, his fine fur damp from the morning dew, ambles across the backyard. He trotted from near the firewood stack, off to the right and out into the woods behind my shed.

Next, a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird stops for a quick drink at the nectar feeder. The last several years, the female hummers were “regular” visitors. But not so this year. I’ve only seen this male make occasional visits, such as this morning.

And the last uncommon visitors were a pair of Blue Groskbeaks. My wife joined me with a cup of coffee when I saw some blue at the seed feeder. I quickly went inside for my telephoto and confirmed the sighting. I tried to tiptoe through the wet grass for a closer shot, but spooked them both off.

Arnie, Christian, Lila and Callie were another batch of kittens brought into the Walton County Animal Control shelter on May 13, 2017. With so many kittens to photograph, I could only post some quick shots in their cage. After getting caught up, I was able to get some better shots a few days later.

Tuesday, 8:56 AM – “Arnie” was a pretty boy with blue eyes that stood out against his orange and white fur. I took him to a shady patch behind the building and photographed him on a pile of lumber. Having time for only one more shoot, “Lila” came out next. Her photograph turned out the best, nestled in between the honeysuckle vines.

Tuesday, 12:06 PM – skipping lunch to get them done, I brought “Christian” and “Callie” into the kitty studio. Adding the bowl and ball helped add some interest and perspective to their photographs.
Christian and Lila were adopted on May 16, 2017 by the same family. Callie was adopted by a different family the same day. Arnie was rescued by Washington Wilkes DAWGS Rescue on May 17, 2017. Arnie’s rescue was sponsored by a pledge from Catherine and Jim Stuff.

Monday, 9:06 AM - Bob was a handsome Beagle that was found by a local rescue foster and brought to the shelter on May 12, 2017. I photographed Bob and several other dogs on a busy Monday morning, May 15. Although I had a series of shots for each dog, I was only able to immediately post one of each.

I did a quick edit of Bob’s “glamour photo” and threw him up there on www.waltonpets.net. Being the adorable little things that they are, Beagles usually don’t have much trouble making it out of the shelter.
Bob was rescued on May 17 by Alcovy Pet Rescue! I finally had time to finish editing the rest of his photos on Friday, May 19, and emailed them to the rescue to use in advertising for his adoption.

Monday, 9:23 AM - “Jake” was surrendered by his owner on May 12, 2017. Sometimes I just can’t understand how someone can give up such a handsome dog. And I really can’t understand why you’d surrender a dog to a “kill” shelter.

True, as handsome a dog as “Jake” was, he would probably get adopted. But bringing him in to the shelter takes up a kennel and could mean another dog has to be put down more quickly for space. Luckily, “Jake” was adopted fairly quickly.
Jake was photographed on April 15, 2017 for the Walton County Animal Control shelter. He was adopted the same day!

Monday, 9:29 AM – “Buck” was removed from a house by the Police Department on May 10, 2017. The landlord said the owner had moved off and abandoned him. After 5 days, it looked like his owner might not show up, so I took him out during an “assembly line” photo morning of several dogs.

Buck was a great dog and full of "smiles"! I love it when a dog perks up and looks happy for his photos.
Buck was photographed on May 15 for the Walton County Animal Control shelter and put on the adoption website www.waltonpets.net. His owner came to claim him from the shelter the day after his photos were taken.

Saturday, 4:21 PM - The day started off damp and gray after the thunderstorms last night. Although it was 65 degrees, it felt a tad cool on my back patio this morning.

Still not seeing any regular appearances by the female Ruby-throated Hummingbirds this year; just an occasional male. The Chipping Sparrows have begun building a nest in Crepe Myrtle tree by my grill. My regular Anoles scurry around.

How many green Carolina Anoles can I photograph on my back patio? As many as I want! Just because something is common, doesn't mean it isn't intriquing and wonderful to behold!

I had fun watching this one. Instead of scurrying away from me, He kept doing his "push-ups" and enlarging his pink dewlap. It is obvious my back patio is his territory to protect. I'm glad he allows me some time to relax out here every once in a while!

From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord's name is to be praised.
Psalm 113:3
In many of my nature journal blog entries from Walton County I refer to the "upper pond." This is a smaller, more secluded pond that lies a few hundred yards past the main retention pond behind my office. Some of the more skittish birds are seen on this pond as it is less frequently disturbed by people.

Friday, 4:10 PM - While passing through Watkinsville on my back-roads drive home from work, another black squirrel caught my eye. I am used to only seeing the Eastern Gray Squirrels in my area.

On my last encounter, I wasn’t quite ready and only managed some blurry shots. But this guy was different. He was standing on his rear legs under an oak tree on the right hand side of the road as I passed by. Wanting a better shot, I turned the truck around and headed back. Upon returning, he had crossed the road into the front yard of a nice, rustic, country home.

Surprisingly, he didn’t take off when I pulled into the gravel driveway. I fired a few shots from the open truck window. I didn’t want to push my luck, but I put it in park and opened my door. Still, he didn’t take off!  I was then able to come around the front of the truck. He stood posed with an acorn in his mouth! This guy was so compliant I was able to pull use two lenses! He watched and waited while I switched to my 300mm lens. I really didn’t want to miss documenting this encounter!

Not seeing many Fox Squirrels in my area, I thought my last encounter was a melanistic Eastern Gray. But after sharing my encounter on iNaturalist, I found that Fox Squirrels aren’t too rare for this area.

Thursday, 3:32 PM – Sassy and Simi were two feisty little kittens that were brought into the shelter on May 11, 2017. Probably the babies of a feral mom, they needed a little work before being ready for a home.

Simi came around quite quickly. In just a short period of time she wanted to run into my hands rather than to run away from them. But the gray kitten, Sassy, was a bit of a pistol. She bit my finger three times during the course of our photo session. It was a bit difficult to photograph a kitty that is constantly hissing and backing away. I propped Sassy on the bookshelf so she couldn’t retreat and hide from me.
Both Simi and Sassy were rescued by Pound Puppies N Kittens Rescue one day after posting their photos on www.waltonpets.net!

Wednesday, 3:27 PM - Just this week the kitten impounds were really on the increase. One batch was picked up with their mother and brought to the shelter on May 10, 2017. They were cute enough to “sell themselves”, but I did some photos in the kitty studio anyway. Shooting every day gives me practice behind the camera and with post-processing.

I had a pretty good feeling that they would get applications, but was a bit shocked when Phantasy had an adoption application submitted within an hour of posting!  Thanks to Facebook, and to Gianna for posting our pets there!
Phantasy and Philea were photographed for the Walton County Animal Control shelter on April 10, 2017.  Both were adopted into new homes the next day!

Wednesday, 8:15 AM – being caught up on shelter animal glamour photos, I took a short morning walk behind the animal shelter and added a new bird to my Life List!

At first I thought I was looking at a White-breasted Nuthatch, but the long tail told a different tale.

After skimming some photos, I realized I had been watching a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.  www.allaboutbirds.org says “Blue-gray Gnatcatchers are tiny, slim songbirds with long legs; a long tail; and a thin, straight bill.” That just about described it perfectly!

This little gem was pretty high up in the trees, quickly skipping around from branch to branch, probably skimming bugs. Cornell Lab again states, “In spite of their name, gnats do not form a significant part of the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher's diet."

“Merida” is a sweet, tiny kitten that was brought in to the Walton County Animal Control shelter on May 8, 2017. She was a friendly little kitten, so I was able to photograph her outside without fear of her running off.  I picked a shady spot with sunlight streaming through the trees behind her. Shooting with a 40mm macro lens at f/2.8 produced that nice background effect (called bokeh by us photography snobs).

I normally have a problem with a blue hue on the coat of black animals. I previously had reduced it by by desaturating the blues, but that can sometimes result in a flat or dull looking coat. Last week, while the intake was slow, I had the chance to explore some more tutorials on the web. While perusing pet photographer Charlotte Reeves’ site (which is awesome), I came across her tutorial on removing color casts from black animals' fur. Following Charlotte’s tutorial worked beautifully!
Merida was photographed for Walton County Animal Control in Georgia on May 8, 2017 and was posted on the shelter’s website www.waltonpets.net. She was adopted the next afternoon!

Grackle Battle Picture
Two Common Grackles involved in a territorial fight. Walton County, GA.
Monday, 10:09 AM - Long, strong pointed weapons engaged in battle... scrapping, grabbing, pinning to the ground... exertions of force and dominance.

No, this wasn’t the inside of the Amphitheatrum Flavium in Rome, but the grass just outside the back door of my office. Two Common Grackles engaged in combat, hardly noticing my appearance.

One source states, “Dominance disputes may be resolved by physical combat including bill-fencing, pecking and clawing.” That is putting it mildly!

Just after they flew off, a coworker observing the battle along with me said, “You don’t see that every day.”

Blue Jay Georgia Birding Picture
Blue Jay songbird perched on railroad ties. Cyanocitta cristata. Blue and gray feathers. Walton County, Monroe, Georgia. USA
A very bright, warm, sunny afternoon just before quitting time. I took a walk up to the Sheriff's firing range for some quick birding. A mockingbird stood panting in the heat on a dirt pile, and hopping around on the pile of railroad ties was a beautiful Blue Jay.

Many birders consider these guys to be bullies or pests because they may eat the eggs of other birds. This particular individual seemed more content to spy out insects in the grass from a perch, hop down for a bite, then hop back up to scan the green blades for more. I sat a couple of minutes and watched him forage.
