Tuesday, 8:59 AM – It isn’t only people that are camera shy. “King” (named after Stephen King for our Halloween themed names) was a bouncy and happy young boy. However, as soon as I’d raise my lens, he turned on that “I just chewed up the remote” sad-eyed look.

He was a young boy (about 10-12 months) that was turned in to the Walton County Animal Control shelter on Saturday, October 28, 2017. Unfortunately, dogs turned in on Saturdays loose a few days of internet postings. But I was able to pull him out for a photo session along with several others this busy morning.
“King” was photographed for the Walton County Animal Control shelter in Georgia on October 31, 2017. He was rescued on November 2, 2017 and his rescue transport was sponsored by a generous donation from Anne!

Tuesday, 9:12 AM – I’m losing count. This is the fourth or fifth Beagle in the last week to come into the shelter. But this handsome older boy wins the award for the longest, biggest, Beagleist ears!!!

“Bagel” was turned in as a stray to the Walton County Animal Control shelter on October 31, 2017. The gentleman surrendering him said he’d had him about 2 weeks.

Since there was no lost report on file on www.helpinglostpets.com, I didn’t want to lose time and walked “Bagel” out behind the shelter for a photography session.

Poor old boy tested heartworm positive, but at least the antigens were low. And as populuar as the last four Beagles were, perhaps he’ll also have a shot at rescue.
“Bagel” was photographed for Walton County Animal Control, Georgia, on October 31, 2017 and put on the shelter’s website, www.waltonpets.net.  He was adopted on November 3rd and was on his way to Kentucky!

Tuesday, 8:32 AM – other staff said, “Boston Terrier… on steroids!” I wasn’t so sure about that. But with his crooked tail, cute underbite and pointy ears, I could say for sure he was a cute pup.

“Snickers” was brought into the Walton County Animal Control shelter as a stray on October 30, 2017. He was a little skittish and unsure his first day, but warmed up to the staff quite well overnight. As long as he was sure you were a friend, he was a friend in return!

He was a smallish medium-sized boy and already about 6 months old, so probably wouldn’t get too much bigger. Even though his stray-hold wasn’t up, I got him his vaccines, deworming, flea meds and “professional” photo session on Halloween morning.
“Snickers” was photographed for Walton County Animal Control shelter in Georgia on October 31, 2017. He was put on the shelter’s website, www.waltonpets.net, in hopes of finding his new home. He was rescued by Washington Wilkes DAWGS rescue on November 7, 2017. He was sponsored by generous donations to the rescue from Blan and Alice.

Waltonpets Furtography Session: Candy Corn

Tuesday, 8:43 AM – Sometimes I wish these dogs could talk. I would love to have known what “Candy Corn” had really been through.

She was turned in to the Walton County Animal Control shelter on October 27, 2017 as a stray. She was found a truck stop on Highway 11, south of Monroe, Georgia. Although she had a brand new blue collar, it didn’t appear that she’d been treated so nicely.

This short, bow-legged Bulldog mix had a swollen rear leg. I wasn’t sure the cause until a puncture opened up and began to drain the following day. She had some type of puncture injury – a dog bite? a gun shot? – and would no doubt need a little bit of vet care and antibiotics.

This poor girl was also absolutely covered in fleas. They were running all over her scabby skin. But a good bit of flea spray would get her on the road to recovery.  And thank God she tested heartworm negative!

For all that neglect, “Candy Corn” was a bit shy when in her kennel, but turned into an affectionate girl when outdoors in a more calm environment.
“Candy Corn” was photography for Walton County Animal Control on October 31, 2017 and placed on the shelter’s website, www.waltonpets.net.  She was rescued by Washington Wilkes DAWGS rescue on November 7, 2017 and sponsored by generous donations to the rescue from Cindy, Barbara, Anne, Lane and Alice.

Tuesday, 8:54 AM – “Chancey” was a Black mouthed Cur mixed breed dog that was surrendered by his owner to the Walton County Animal Control shelter on October 27, 2017. This well-behaved boy would sit and shake on command and was an excellent leash walker. He was also already neutered, microchipped, housebroken and playful with other dogs, which would greatly increase his chances of adoption or rescue.
“Chancey” was photographed on October 31, 2017 and placed on the shelter’s website, www.waltonpets.net. He was rescued on November 1, 2017 by Washington-Wilkes DAWGS Rescue and sponsored by generous donations to the rescue from Barbara and Cindy!

Tuesday, 9:34 AM – “Gobstopper” and “Rolo” (Halloween themed names this month) were two adorable kittens surrendered to the shelter on October 17, 2017.

Surprisingly, I had time that morning to get their photos against the gray muslin backdrop. I always love how the orange cats contrast against the grayish-blue background. Complementary colors on the color wheel!

They were both adopted together by Jessica in a 2-for-1 adoption (who can resist?) on October 20, 2017.

Friday, 11:26 AM - Happy! Happy! Happy! That’s “Snickers”! A happy boyl!  “Snickers” was turned in to the Walton County Animal Control shelter as a stray on October 12, 2017. He had never met any of us before, but that really didn’t matter to him. He was so happy to see all of us! The only time I think he was sad was when the shelter staff left for the day.

He was "just a mutt", but handsome nonetheless. It looked like perhaps there was a little Collie, or shepherd, or Anatolian back in the blood line somewhere. He already had some good size for a young age (about 5 months old). Playful, happy boy… deserving of a good home!
“Snickers” was turned in to the Walton County Animal Control shelter in Monroe, Georgia on October 12, 2017. He was photographed for the shelter’s website, www.waltonpets.net on October 13, 2017. He was adopted by Brittany on October 16, 2017!

Friday, 11:19 AM – “Pumpkin” was a sweet, submissive pup that was picked up by a Walton County Animal control officer on October 12, 2017.

She was a young girl and probably never too far from home yet. She wasn't too sure of the surroundings and the loud kennel. So she plopped down in the grass for her photo session.

Being a sweet and submissive girl, she’d make a great family pet to grow up with the kids.
“Pumpkin” was photographed for the Walton County Animal Control shelter on October 13, 2017 and put on the shelter’s website, www.waltonpets.net to find a new home. She was adopted by Michaela on October 18, 2017!

Friday, 11:09 AM - “Peyton” was a young, cute, bat-eared little girl that got her owner into a bit of trouble for wandering the mobile home park to play with the kids. Instead of getting a citation, her owner decided to surrender her to the animal control shelter where she could get a new home and stay put!

The overcast skies allowed for a late morning photo session. She did really well walking on the leash for a young dog (about 7 months old) and was happy to get into the pen with other pups.

Her photos were good, but sometimes the camera just can’t bring out their personalities. Although she looked like a large dog in her photos, she was actually a smaller sized dog, about 35 pounds; probably mixed with cattledog or heeler. She also felt she had to give a “tough girl” stare to the camera, but was a happy and playful pup. I may have been able to soften that big, tough look by going more wide-angle, but I only had my 70-200 with me.
"Peyton" was surrendered to the Walton County Animal Control shelter on October 13, 2017. She was photographed the same day and placed on the shelter's adoption website, www.waltonpets.net. She was adopted by Karen and her kids on October 13, 2017!

Thursday, 9:17 AM - What a strikingly beautiful dog! Such perfectly conformed features. She had the intense stare of a Pharaoh Hound, the quiet alertness of a Basenji, and the free spirit of a Siberian Husky. Perhaps all three? Perhaps none of those.

“Cleopatra” was picked up stray by a Walton County Animal Control officer on October 9, 2017. After three days, no owner had come forward, so it was time for a photo session.

Patches of blazing orange sunrise illuminated her sleek coat, erect ears and golden eyes. Simply gorgeous, and with a personality to match. She was social and happy, always delighted to see someone come into the kennel. She also had a playful disposition toward a couple of other dogs in the shelter.
"Cleopatra" was photographed for the Walton County Animal Control shelter on October 12, 2017 and placed on the shelter's adoption website, www.waltonpets.net. She was adopted on October 18 and was sponsored with a free pet sitting voucher from Out of Town Pet Care!

Thursday, 9:32 AM – Who doesn’t love a Beagle? They may not always be the brightest dogs in the pack, but are usually the most adorable. Smaller sized; shorter legs; longer ears… and I’ve never met a mean Beagle!

“Elvira” was no exception. This sweet senior was picked up stray by a Walton County Animal Control officer on October 10, 2017. The woman who called to have her picked up said she was killing chickens. But when a child at home was asked about the dead chickens, he replied, “Dead? She was just chasing the chickens trying to play with them!”

“Elvira” had a few issues normally associated with other dogs (possible mammary tumor and some grimy teeth), but was a wonderful girl and ready for a new life. One of comfort and pampering!
Elvira was photographed for the Walton County Animal Control shelter on October 12, 2017 and placed on the shelter’s website, www.waltonpets.net. She was rescued by Alcovy Pet Rescue on October 16, 2017! Her rescue was sponsored by generous donations to the rescue by Nance, Anne, Christie, Pam, Diane, Trish and Elizabeth.

Great Egret in the Fog Picture
White Great Egret, Ardea alba, standing on bank of foggy pond fishing. Walton County, Georgia, USA. Large white heron wading bird.
Tuesday, 8:21 AM – The clouds, rain and wind continue. No way to see the Draconid meteor shower on Sunday. Several downpours last night were enough to wake me out of my sleep.

A magenta hue to the gloomy dawn as a thick gray cloud layer veils the morning sunrise. A thick, damp, warm foggy air surrounds me as I walk to the upper shelter pond. A Great Blue Heron is barely discernable as it feeds far across the pond on the more wooded end. A single turtle breaks the surface of the still pond to watch my movements.

The “kyeer” screams of Northern Flickers have filled the air around my home and the shelter the last few weeks. Finally able to catch a glimpse of one on the ground near the firing range. It soon retreated up into a tall pine.

Walking back to the office to commence a day of work, a white Great Egret stands out in the fog as he fishes along the main shelter pond.

I’ve done occasional moon shots. But as a special project I wanted to follow it through all the major phases. I missed only the waning crescent on September 16 because of cloud cover.

Full Moon Picture

Wednesday, September 6, 9:25 PM – the cloudy day cleared to reveal a big full moon that seemed to travel along with us just above the horizon as we drove home from church. I set up my tripod in the driveway pointing east. I was amazed at how quickly the moon moved through the viewfinder while using the 600mm lens.
Waning gibbious Moon Picture

Saturday, September 9, 6:21 AM – dropping off my daughter for an early morning bus ride to her cross country meet, the waning gibbous (88% illumination) was still in the sky. It hung large and bright in the clear dark sky to the southwest. Moonset at 10:29 AM.
Last Quarter Moon Picture
Wednesday, September 13, 6:38 AM – the persistent clouds overnight had me thinking I’d miss this last quarter moon. I stepped out to my driveway after waking but the sky was still veiled. But while at the church for morning prayer meeting, the fast moving cloud layer began to reveal breaks. Having no tripod, I steadied the camera against the hood of my truck, aimed nearly straight up into the air, and waiting for a clearing. According to the Moon Giant website, I was born during a last quarter moon many moons ago!
Waxing Crescent Moon Picture

Monday, September 25, 8:36 PM – the moon today, a waxing cresent (26% illumination) hangs in the western sky just after sunset. Although just a crescent, it has brightened the clear sky to a deep, deep blue rather than pitch black.
First Quarter Moon Picture

Thursday, September 28, 9:17 PM – shot the first quarter moon right off the back patio of my home. Moonrise 2:53 PM; moonset 12:34 AM.
Waxing Gibbous Moon Picture

Sunday, October 1, 9:08 PM –The moon is a large, bright waxing gibbous (77% illumination). So much detail can be seen along the shaded edge through my 600mm lens; craters, pits, plains. The word “gibbous” first appeared in the 14th century and has its root in the Latin word gibbosus, meaning ‘humpbacked’.
Full Hunters Harvest Moon Picture
Friday, October 6, 6:15 AM – the moon has come full circle through its phases back to a Hunter’s Harvest Full Moon. The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest to the Autumnal Equinox. Most years it occurs in September, but around every three years makes an October appearance. The October full moon is also called the Hunter’s Moon. It rises in the sky about 30 minutes earlier than normal thus allowing more time to hunt and prepare for the coming winter. I shot this spectacle from my truck in the church parking lot as it hung big and bright over downtown Athens, Georgia.

Waltonpets Furtography Session: Sugar

Thursday, 9:14 AM – “Sugar” was another of several dogs that got an outdoor photoshoot early on a Thursday morning.

This sweet, big girl had been reported running loose in the neighborhood on several occasions but was finally brought in to the shelter by a citizen on October 4, 2017.

She was adopted by a resident of the neighborhood, but was brought back a few days later when it wasn’t working out.

“Sugar” had a bit of limp on her back legs or hips every once in a while. But it didn’t seem like anything major. She was rescued by Canine Pet Rescue.

A few days later the rescue sent an email that she had a completely torn ACL in one leg, and partial tear in the other. It would be a big expense for the rescue, but saved this girl’s life.
