Friday, 8:56 AM - Starla is no junkyard dog! This pretty pittie soaks in attention, but doesn’t jump all up in your business. She sits on command and does great on the leash. She doesn’t seem like too old of a dog, but her teeth are pretty worn down. She’s probably chewed on a lot of sticks, rocks, and junk to ease the boredom of backyard life. (I have to confess, she’s even shredded a few shelter blankets the last few days!).

Starla looks to be in good health. She tested heartworm negative and has been vaccinated and dewormed. We can’t see if there is a spay scar or not, but she doesn’t look to have ever had puppies.

When she was picked up by an animal control officer, she was wearing three rabies tags. The most recent tag was from Alabama issued in 2010. We called the owner on file and she said it had belonged to her Bernese Mountain Dog which had passed several years ago. She wasn’t sure who would now be wearing that tag.

I’m sure Strala will adjust just fine to your sleep-number mattress firmness setting and not complain one bit. Oh so happy to get out of the backyard and into the good life!
Starla had a quick photo session on May 3 for the Walton County Animal Control shelter. She had a second "junkyard theme" photoshoot on May 5, 2017. After a long wait, Starla was finally rescued on May 17 by Washington Wilkes DAWGS! Her rescue was sponsored by generous donations from Lane, Alice, Barbara, Sara, D, Blan, Trina and Eilieen.

“All the boxes are loaded into the backseat. On the next trip they’ll take me… The mattresses are strapped to the roof of the car on this run. On the next run I’m sure they’ll get me… There goes the kids’ bicycles. Surely the next ride is mine. All the trash is left out at the curb… and so am I.”

“Sadie” was signed over to Walton County Animal Control on April 26, 2017 by a property owner who said their tenant moved off and left her behind. She has sat for over a week in the pound and no owner has come for her… and no rescue or adopter either.

She is a happy girl that is always ready to see people and other dogs. She gets pretty excited, but you can’t blame her after being ignored out in the backyard for so long. She doesn’t show any aggression with other dogs, but is a bit “in your face” at times, which might annoy some dogs. She kept jumping up and nipping Cosmos’ jowls to get his attention.

She looks to have some muscle atrophy or a birth defect in her front left leg. But it doesn’t slow her down any and only adds to her already wonderful personality. Thanks to a donation to the shelter from Laura, she tested heartworm negative and was vaccinated and dewormed.
Sadie was photographed for the Walton County Animal Control shelter on May 5, 2017. Sadie was finally rescued on May 9 by Brass Knuckle Pin Ups Rescue! She was sponsored by donations from D, Eileen, Alice, S., Lane, Lou, Lorraine, Allison, Sara, Barbara, Margaret, Van and Jane!

Queenie photographed outdoors against a black backdrop. See yesterday's blog.

The series below shows the stages from the in-camera shot to a final image.
If Queenie could talk, she may have a story or two from her life. Queenie has two long scars from her hip down her back right leg. She’s also a little weak on that hip. Perhaps many years ago she had an accident or surgery. But she has adjusted just fine. Maybe at her age the arthritis in that hip creeps up on cold mornings. But doesn't age creep up on us all?!

Queenie was picked up stray by an animal control officer on May 1, 2017. She’s a funny girl full of personality. She wants to bark to get your attention, but only manages a raspy breath and faint bark. She is content just to stand or lie nearby; a calm girl, confident at her stage in life. At one point during her photo shoot, she rolled over on her back, twisting and turning to scratch her back on the pavement… like a seal on the beach! She looked so content and with a happy twinkle in her eye.

Queenie did fine meeting other dogs in the shelter. She didn’t really care to interact too much or go for a romp. But when they stopped to sniff her, she obliged without any aggression or growling.  I was pleasantly surprised when she tested heartworm negative. She was also vaccinated, dewormed and de-flead!

Her duct-tape and wire-tied collar shows somebody "cared" for her, but nobody has come to claim this sweet senior.
“Queenie” was photographed on May 3, 2017 for the Walton County Animal Control Shelter. Intake slowed enough that Queenie got a second photo session in the Goldenrod flowers on May 5. She was rescued on May 12 by Believe in Buster Rescue Sanctuary! She was sponsored by Gigi, Lane, Alice, Lisa, D, Sara, Lorraine and Cyndi.

Last month I was able to get the full version of Photoshop.  I had been using PS Elements 11 for quite some time. But with new software comes a whole new level of learning. In my spare moments, I’ve been soaking up tutorial after tutorial on the internet and really taking advantage of editing in layers.

However, I’ve found there can be no end to tinkering with photos in Photoshop. Each adjustment can make the photo look intriguing. I can spend 20 minutes and settle on a final, awesome edit. Then I go back through making different adjustments, and now a better final, awesome edit. Then I go back through… well, you get the idea.

My first few shots were accidentally over-exposed and discarded. But on a rainy afternoon I played with those images in Camera Raw and Photoshop CS6 for fun and practice.

In the long run, all that is needed is a decent photo so potential adopters have an idea of what is in the shelter. And perhaps all those meticulous edits aren’t that noticeable. But, if a little bit of extra editing can grab an eye, why not? Attracting a second look might mean the difference between adoption or euthanasia. Well worth every perfectionist edit!

Wednesday, 11:14 AM - On one of my million trips between the admin office and the kennels, I saw a Great Blue Heron fishing on the other side of the shelter pond. I ran back in for my long lens and teleconverter.

I was in for a treat… as soon as I lifted my glass, he brought a rather large bream up out of the water. It looked way too big for him to swallow, but it was gone in two gulps!

At that distance, the photo quality wasn’t so great, especially since the Heron was backlit. But still a fun sight to see!

A simple setup.

Wednesday, 8:57 AM - “He’s a big ol’ bear!” That’s what a shelter co-worker affectionately exclaimed as I walked Cosmos out for his glamour photos. And truly, at 82 pounds, he is a big, fluffy, teddy-bear ready to give some lovin’. His calm demeanor, wonderful heel while on leash, and willingness to sit on command endeared him to my heart.

Cosmos was picked up stray on Monroe Jersey Rd on May 2, 2017. He had no collar, tag, chip or other way to find his way home. It is hard to believe that no owner came looking for him.

Other than being heartworm positive (which the antigens are very low - - the positive dot barely showed up), he seems in perfect health. When I knelt down to draw blood for a heartworm test, he bowed his head and tenderly licked my hand, even as that evil little needle poked his arm. I vaccinated, dewormed and gave him a shot of flea spray. His teeth, eyes and coat all look great. But the greatest thing about him is his big loving personality!

I remembered a blog post on woofliketomeet.com I had read several months ago about photographing black dogs on a black backdrop. Why not give it a try? Simple enough, hang up a black sheet and fire away!

I draped a cheap, black, twin sheet over the fence in a shaded spot next to the shelter. Next to it I hung my more expensive muslin background. I used a carabiner to attach the leash the fence just below the backdrops and paraded out “Cosmos” for head shots.

He sat pretty well for his session, but was a bit antsy that I didn’t walk him first. So, in protest, he hiked his leg on peed on my backdrop!  Of course, he missed the cheap black sheet and instead drenched my more expensive muslin.

The in-camera results were okay, but really began to look good with some post-processing. I used adjustment layers to darken the backdrops a bit more, and some dodging and burning to bring out their eyes and coat highlights. A nice change of pace from the “dog in the woods” shots I’m always posting.

Friday, May 5, 8:11 AM – since Cosmos’ previous photos were all headshots, I wanted to get some full body shots… and to take him on that long walk I didn’t deliver before the last photo session! We out back behind the shelter near the pond and, once again, he was the perfect gentleman, posing for his photos while gently wagging that curled, fluffy tail!
Cosmos was photographed on May 3 and again on May 5, 2017 for the Walton County Animal Control shelter and posted on the adoption website www.waltonpets.net. Cosmos went for a weekend home visit on May 6 with a fellow county employee and friend. He was a smart boy and played it cool with Linda's several cats, securing himself a good home for years to come!

Wednesday, 8:39 AM - I guess it is a “weed”, but Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus carota) sure is pretty. What a beautiful, large white bloom, intricately formed by hundreds of smaller white blooms. In addition to looking like lace, many websites state that it earned its common name from a legend that Queen Anne of England (1665-1714) pricked her finger and a drop of blood landed on white lace she was sewing.

These springtime blooms have popped up all along the roadsides and fields here in Georgia. There are many along the edges of the shelter pond that frequently get mowed down. Is something really a “weed” just because we say it is?

Tuesday, 8:27 AM - Two tiny Pitbull puppies were brought to the shelter on Saturday afternoon. Lucky for them, a local rescuer happened to be there and immediately fell in love, promising to pick them up later.

Since I had a spare moment, I got a few shots of these cuties to help the rescue get them posted and adopted quickly. The quicker they get them re-homed, the quicker they'll be back to rescue more pups!
Ben and Jerry were photographed and rescued by Circle of Friends Animal Society on May 2, 2017.

Tuesday 7:51 AM - Ms. Daisy was a pretty Pointer that came into the shelter after she had a little too much fun in someone’s chicken yard. She was picked up by an animal control officer on May 1, 2017 on Magnolia Lane in Monroe, GA. A very affectionate girl, she was quite happy to lean upon my legs and coat my black pants with her white hair!
Daisy was photographed for Walton County Animal Control on May 2, 2017 and put on the shelter’s adoption website www.waltonpets.net.  She was adopted on May 4, 2017!

Friday, 9:40 AM - Imagine leaving two cuties like this on the side of the road and driving off.  Where is your heart?  Well, that is what happened to these cute twin sisters. The gentleman that called Walton County Animal Control said someone in a red pickup truck put them out on the street and drove off.

I had just finished editing their photos and was about to post them on the web when a local rescuer came by to meet "Ziggy" and "Cassidy". So, without even advertising these cuties, there were already out the door and safe!
Abbie and Addie were photographed for Walton County Animal Control on April 28, 2017 and rescued the very same day by Circle of Friends Animal Society!

Friday, 9:44 AM - Those adorable eyes! I had to make them pop using some new burn and dodge techniques I learned in Photoshop this week.

“Ziggy” was a pretty pittie pup picked up in Conestoga Mobile Home Park on April 27, 2017. It was a cloudy morning, so I sat him up on a stack of hay bales near the rear of the shelter and fired away. Almost immediately, a shelter friend from a local rescue saw those eyes and came by to meet him.
Ziggy was photographed for Walton County Animal Control on April 28, 2017 and put on the website www.waltonpets.net. He was rescued first thing in the morning on May 1 by Circle of Friends Rescue!  Ziggy had a generous $50 sponsorship from D. Miller.

Thursday, 9:25 AM - “Cat season” has begun. Each spring commences a flood of stray cats trapped by citizens and surrendered to the shelter. Trevor was a big, unneutered male cat brought in on April 26, 2017, at the beginning of that wave of cat intake.

Trevor was trapped by a citizen on Rambling Woods Drive. Even though he was fat and healthy, he probably had no “owner”. People might feed an outdoor cat for years, but still call it a stray and not take responsibility. Being fairly tame, it was worth a shot at getting him adopted. He’d make a good barn cat… and there are a lot of people with barns in Walton County!

I shot Trevor in the shelter's "kitty studio" using a black sheet as a backdrop. Exposing for his white fur helped completely blacken the background.
"Trevor" was photographed for the Walton County Animal Control shelter on April 27, 2017. Trevor was rescued by Leica's Saving Paws rescue on May 1, 2017 and was sponsored with a donation by Catherine and Jim!

Wednesday, 8:56 AM – Assembly line photography! I came in fired up and ready to get caught up on the photos this morning. I grabbed two lenses and my bag of squeaky toys, treats, bandanas and leashes. All the photos would be in the same spot behind the shelter, one after another, but I wanted to push through and get as many dogs done as I could.

I started in the A kennels and went down the line. Although “Conner” was microchipped and his owner most likely would be contacted, I grabbed him for a quick photo session anyway. I knew this handsome Dobie would be quite photogenic. Perhaps he’d even generate a little money as a stock photo sale (a whopping 42 cents per photo, lol).
Conner was photographed for the Walton County Animal Control shelter on April 26, 2017. He was claimed a few hours later by his owner.

Wednesday 8:41 AM – Big Boy Bowser! He was a handsome Lab boy that was picked up stray by one of the animal control officers on April 25, 2017. He had been hanging around a house out in the country for a couple of days, but no owner had come looking for him, so he came into the care of the shelter.

Bowser didn’t think too highly of the black box that I kept pointing at him (my camera) and played the bashful boy. In fact, he was so stiff during his photo session, I actually had to pull him up into a sitting position and move his legs into a comfortable looking position!  No amount of squeaky toys, imitation barking or offers of treats could get him to perk up his ears and get enthusiastic about having his pictures taken. But still a handsome boy nonetheless!
Bowser was photographed for Walton County Animal Control on April 26, 2017 and put on the shelter’s adoption website, www.waltonpets.net.  Bowser was rescued by Niagara Dog Rescue on April 28! His rescue was sponsored by a donation pledge from D.!

Wednesday, 9:05 AM - “Mickey” was a really cute, young, medium-sized Beagle mix that was picked up stray at the Loganville Police Department on April 25, 2017. Being a smaller sized dog, he’d probably have a good shot at getting rescued quickly.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get his cute, little playful personality to come out in the photos. He didn’t like being leashed to a tree for photos too much... he would much rather have been playing with me than sitting for a photo shoot!
Mickey was photographed for the Walton County Animal Control shelter on April 26, 2017 and put on the shelter’s website, www.waltonpets.net for adoption or rescue. Mickey was adopted on April 29! His adoption was sponsored with a free neuter voucher from Paradox Spay/Neuter Clinic!
